National Gallery Of Art

If you didn’t already know, most museums in D.C. are free — and we’ve taken full advantage of that. The National Gallery of Art is one of our favorite places in the city. From the timeless elegance of its architectural design to the most striking and thought-provoking works inside, it’s a space that never fails to inspire us. Wandering its galleries together has become one of our favorite ways to spend an afternoon

Great Falls

The Great Falls area offers several scenic hiking trails and easy access to the C&O Canal towpath, making it a perfect spot to spend a relaxing day outdoors. Whenever we have the time, we love coming here to walk, explore, and take in the views. There are two ways to experience the park — from the Maryland side or the Virginia side. We usually stick to the Maryland side, but if you choose to visit from Virginia, you’ll have just as beautiful an experience.

Sugarloaf Mountain

If you’re short on time but still want a great outdoor adventure, you can hike Sugarloaf Mountain itself. With a variety of trails to choose from, it’s easy to tailor the experience to your schedule and comfort level. Rising 1,282 feet above sea level — and about 800 feet above the surrounding landscape — Sugarloaf offers beautiful panoramic views without being overly strenuous. It’s a relatively easygoing hike and one of our favorite quick escapes into nature.

Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center

The Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center, located in Chantilly, Virginia, is home to one of the largest aviation and space hangars in the world. Inside, you’ll find more than 3,000 historic artifacts, including over 200 aircraft and spacecraft that have shaped the course of history. Walking through the massive hangars is truly awe-inspiring. Our absolute favorite display is the legendary Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird — seeing it up close is something you don’t forget.

Smithsonian's National Zoo

The Smithsonian's National Zoo is one of the best family-friendly attractions in the city. It’s also one of the few places in the United States where you can see giant pandas, making it an especially memorable visit. With approximately 222 different species and a wide variety of exhibits to explore, there’s always something exciting to discover. It’s a fun and easy way to spend the day.

Longwood Gardens

If you love plants, Longwood Gardens is absolutely worth the trip. It’s a bit of a drive from MD, but once you arrive, you’ll quickly see why we think it’s so special. The gardens are beautifully designed and incredibly diverse — from the peaceful Bonsai Courtyard to the stunning Italian Water Garden, there’s something breathtaking around every corner. Fun fact: this is the place where we got engaged. It will always hold a special place in our hearts.
